Step 6 Installing the Rudder Pedals

Given that I ordered my pedals from Dennis Oelmann, I didn't have on-hand some of the other parts you'd need, like the CS-13 spacers that folks either make, used to order from Brock and perhaps are now ordering from the Cozy Girrrls.  I made some temporary spacers out of some carbon fiber tubing I had left over from a kite project.
I made these pieces per plans with some minor exceptions.  I used two pieces of foam, to ensure the pieces were parallel fore and aft, also, I cut some slots in the outside piece of foam to allow the pedal pivot to align itself properly, without binding, when it was floxed in place.
This picture shows the foam pieces, routed and carved to accept the aluminum-mounted nutplate.
Once all of those parts fit properly, they get assembled and the aluminum pieces get floxed into place.  Note the piece of peel ply I used to prevent the flox from getting where it's not supposed to be.
Once the flox cured, I sanded around the foam blocks with 36 grit to ready these mount points for the fiberglass layups.
I made patterns for the layups that covered the rudder pedal mount points out of paper, then transferred them to some plastic film.  I also made lines where the glass needed to be cut.
Cut fiberglass, wet out the laups, install, stipple/squeegee and peel ply.  Let these cure and the rudder pedals are just about finished.
Other side, just in case you weren't sure if I did two or not....
I clamped the pedals together, laying flat on the jig table so they'd be parallel when drilled/bolted together.  I used AN-4 hardware here vice AN-3 in the plans per Dennis.  Makes the pedal assemblies a little more rigid.
I guess I don't have any photos of the pedals, bolted together and installed, to put here.  This one will have to do - it's from later in the construction process after the master cylinders have been mounted.

Oh - by the way - that step in the plans that calls for a light spring to hold the pedal erect I'm skipping.  These pedals with Matco cylinders shouldn't need that spring.

That completes the rudder pedals.

Next step is Installing the Master Brake Cylinders.
