Rudder Cable Brackets

  • Step 1 RUDDER CABLE BRACKETS

It's been a long time since I installed these bolts.  I checked my builder's log and the lower firewall was done in March, 2002.  The bottom was glassed in December, 2002.

Not so much due to the time, but, due to the layups done after these bolts were installed (should have covered the shanks with heat shrink tubing) they had epoxy in the threads and there was no way I was getting nuts on them let alone brackets.

To solve the problem, I used an adjustable die.  I set it quite loose so as to not cut new thread or damage the plating.  Worked great.  The epoxy really doesn't stick well to unprepared metal, and, the die caused it to crack & break and fall out of the threads.

Now to try the brackets.  I didn't have these when I installed these bolts.  I did measure carefully, but, slip fit of a four bolt hole bracket was going to require close alignment.  I ended up opening the holes in the brackets using one numbered-drill bit size bigger than they came 'from the factory' but after that they fit fine.  Note the alignment of the pulley to the electrical channel - seems to be near perfect.  Nice when a plan comes together.

Rudder cable pulley is a standard one you can order from Wicks, btw.

Brackets, however, are from the Cozy Girrls.  Note there are no cotter pin holes drilled yet.  I suspect they don't add these to allow the brackets to be used interchangeably left to right.

Also note the extra washers.  I do this to prevent the locking nuts from engaging fully.  Yes, I'll remove the washers upon full install and use new nuts as needed.
